My father strongly believed in education for a better community
Dad was very community minded and community needs required educated citizens , this included moral, cultural, and the aesthetic aspects of education.
He strongly believed that I should receive the best education possible, even though he himself had no formal education.
We were not wealthy, and to fund my education, he sold his favourite horse … every time I think of him, tears well in my eyes, realising the great love he had for me and for my education.
His belief that education was how individuals could change themselves as well as a community and society was strongly ingrained right from the earliest days.
“Tell me and I forget, teach me and I may remember, involve me and I learn.”
His sense of community covered many aspects of my upbringing and into my later life, focused on developing a sense of intellectual responsibility and the power of democratic citizenship.
My father understood that education is the right and responsibility of every individual, and that an educated person has a responsibility to improve the democratic values that bind a society together strengthening the community.
My father believed that the educated citizen should fight for the rights of every person, to ensure that he or she is provided the opportunity of a good quality education.
He earnt and received the respect of the whole community for his stance … and I am grateful and forever indebted to him.
